A serial offender who was tasered by police during a crime spree in the Cirencester and Dursley areas simply pulled the stun gun’s barbs out of his back and cycled off on a stolen bike, a court heard last week.
It was the second time that Daniel Savory, 42, had been tasered by police who caught him red-handed during his offending, Gloucester Crown Court was told.
Savory, of Broadleaze, Down Ampney, near Cirencester, was jailed for a total of 21 months after he admitted offenses of burglary, assault, handling stolen goods, and driving while banned, without insurance, and with excess alcohol on the breath. He was also banned from driving for two years after his release.
The offenses were committed in breach of a suspended jail term that was already hanging over him, the court was told. Prosecutor Rhianna Fricker said that on 7th October 2019 Savory broke into the garage of a 72-year-old woman’s home just a couple of streets away from his own address.
He stole power tools and fishing equipment worth £1,840 and caused damage to the property by breaking in, she said. But he injured himself in the process and was identified as the culprit by his DNA.
Ms. Fricker said Savory’s next offense was on 11th August 2020 when two police officers on patrol in Second Avenue, Dursley, saw a Ford Fiesta coming around a corner towards them. It stopped and three people got out.
The two passengers were detained by one officer while the other chased after Savory, who was the driver.
“He was told to stop and lie on the ground but he ignored this and turned and walked towards the officer,” Ms. Fricker said.
“He was warned he would be tasered if he did not stop. The defendant ignored the warning, which resulted in him being tasered before he was arrested.
“A breath test showed he was over the limit with a reading of 54micrograms. The legal limit is 35mcgs.”
Ms. Fricker said Savory’s next offense was an assault causing actual bodily harm to his former partner in Dursley on June 22 this year.
In The Slade in Dursley, the pair had an argument about the woman’s dog and Savory took hold of the dog and flung it away.
“He then punched his ex-partner several times.”
Ms. Fricker said on July 18th this year Savory and another man was seen riding in Down Ampney on stolen pedal bikes. One officer caught up with Savory and told him to stop or he would be tasered.
“He did not stop and was tasered and he fell forwards onto the handlebars,” said Ms. Fricker.
“But he then removed the barbs of the taser from his back and rode on.”
“The police followed him and used their patrol car to push the bike and the defendant fell from it and was arrested. It was found that the bikes had been stolen earlier from an address nearby.”
Ms. Fricker said Savory had a criminal record running to several pages detailing dishonesty offenses from 1995 to 2015 as well as some offenses of violence and driving while banned.
The judge jailed Savory for 12 months for the burglary, eight months consecutively for the assault, two months concurrently for the dishonest handling of the stolen bike, six weeks concurrently for driving while banned and one month consecutively for breach of the suspended sentence.
As well as the two-year disqualification for the offense of driving while banned, the Recorder also fined Savory £150 for the excess alcohol offense and imposed no separate penalty except a license endorsement for having no insurance.
