Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in person at a court hearing on Monday for the first time since she was detained nearly four months ago in Naypyitaw, according to local media.

Suu Kyi looked in good health during a 30-minute meeting with her legal team, but said she had no access to newspapers in detention and was only partially aware of what was happening outside, her legal team head Khin Maung Zaw told reporters.

The 75-year-old former leader is now facing charges ranging from illegally possessing walkie-talkie radios to violating a state secrets law, punishable by 14 years in prison.

“She wishes her people to stay healthy as well as affirmed the NLD will exist as long as people exist because it was founded for people,” her lawyer Min Min Soe was quoted as saying.

The next hearing was set for June 7, Min Min Soe said, adding that she had also met with former President U Win Myint.

Myanmar declared a one-year state of emergency after the military took over and detained Win Myint and Suu Kyi, along with other officials from the National League for Democracy (NLD) on February 1.

The military had alleged that there was massive voting fraud in the country’s November 2020 general elections, which saw the NLD win a majority of seats in both houses of parliament. Because of this, the election commission is going to dissolve the party, local media reported on Friday, quoting a commissioner.
