TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi felicitated the Syrian government and nation on successful parliamentary elections held on Sunday in the Arab country, and hoped that the event will pave the way for sustainable peace and stability in Syria.

Syria held elections under circumstances while the nation is facing conflicts and destructions by terrorist groups and the illegal presence of foreign occupying forces, as well as the brutal [US] sanctions on the country, Mousavi said on Monday.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran hopes the successful parliamentary elections will be a positive step on the path of achieving peace, stability and development in Syria in line with the efforts to ease the sufferings of the people,” he added.

Syrian voters took to the ballot boxes on Sunday as Syria held its third parliamentary elections since the start of the Western-orchestrated war in 2011. The elections had been slated for April but they were postponed twice due to coronavirus outbreak.

1,656 candidates are competing for 250 seats in the Syrian parliament. The polls are held across 70% of territory under government control.
