A doctor at a local hospital in the northern Afghan city of Aybak has confirmed that at least 16 people were killed and 24 others were injured in a school bomb.

On Wednesday, a physician in Aybak, located approximately 130 miles (200 kilometers) north of Kabul, stated that the majority of the victims were children.

He told AFP under anonymity, “All of them are children and regular people.”

An official from the province has verified the explosion but has no information on casualties.

For the province administration of Samangan, spokesman Emdadullah Muhajir remarked further, “In the middle of the city, at the Jahdia Madrassa, an explosion occurred around 12:45 p.m. This madrassa (religious institution) has a large number of male students.”

Initially, it was unclear who had caused the explosion. An inquiry has been launched, Muhajir has announced.

Abdul Nafi Takor, a spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior, verified the explosion and said that at least 10 people had been killed and many more wounded.

Takor has said, “Our detective and security teams are striving to locate and bring to justice the culprits of this horrible murder.”

There have been a number of assaults, especially on mosques, in recent months; some of them have been claimed by Daesh, despite the Taliban’s claims that they are focused on safeguarding the war-torn nation since taking control last year.
