Environmental groups have slammed an unregulated mining explosion captured on video in Marivan province, western Iran. The footage shows a quarry detonating amidst forested mountains near the village of Savva to extract sand and gravel.
The quarry operating on the outskirts of Savva, located in the Khav district of Marivan county, has for years conducted uncontrolled mountain blasting with no regard for environmental standards or community safety. The mining company is seen leveling vast swaths of forested hills in full view of residents through terrifying explosions adjacent to the international Bashmagh highway and Bitumen and oil derivatives reservoirs
Critics argue the wanton destruction of Iran’s fragile ecosystems and habitats for wildlife has gone unchecked for too long in the remote region. The recent blast undoubtedly damaged trees and endangered animals in the area, with unclear measures to monitor or mitigate the ecological impact, they say.
As public concern grows over the lack of oversight on resource extraction projects, environmental groups are calling for an immediate halt to the quarry’s operations and a full investigation. The footage underscores the need for stricter regulations to curb unregulated mining that risks both the environment and community wellbeing.
