Jordanian Army announced on Tuesday that one of its border guards was killed and another was injured in an armed attack by drug traffickers on the Syrian-Jordanian border.
The Jordanian Army said in a statement that clashes broke out with the traffickers, resulting in the killing of officer Ayad Al-N’aimi and the injury of officer Salem Salem. The injured officer was transported to hospital to receive treatment.
Dozens of traffickers carried out the attack, opening fire at the Jordanian border guards and taking advantage of dusty weather to smuggle big amounts of drugs, according to the statement.
As a result of the clashes, the border guards killed a number of the traffickers and forced the rest to flee into Syrian territory, according to the statement.
On Dec. 5, the Jordanian army said it thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs from Syria and killed three smugglers. At the time, the army seized about 233,000 captagon pills and 538 kilograms of hashish.
Jordan regularly reports seizing amounts of captagon and various types of drugs. The Jordanian army occasionally declares thwarting attempts to smuggle drugs from Syrian territory.
